I looked into where this came from, because "light therapy" sounded like something sold at a mall kiosk. It's older than most of what my doctor has offered me.
1903
A Danish physician named Niels Finsen won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for treating disease with concentrated light. Within a few years there were roughly forty Finsen Institutes across Europe and America. Then antibiotics arrived, light therapy was set aside, and a Nobel-winning treatment was forgotten.
1967
In Budapest, Endre Mester set out to find whether laser light caused cancer. He shaved a group of mice and exposed them to a low-power laser. No tumors. What he found was that the treated mice grew their hair back faster and healed faster than the ones he'd left alone. He'd stumbled into the fact that low-level light makes tissue repair itself faster. It took decades to be taken seriously.
THE 1990s
NASA built LED arrays to grow plants aboard the Space Shuttle. Researchers working under those lights noticed the cuts on their own hands closing faster than they should.
